Parkinson’s Disease: Aerobics Could Slow It Down
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system with symptoms such as rigid muscles, slowed movement, as well as impaired posture and balance. People suffering from the disease now have some hope in the form of a new research, reports stuff.co.nz.
The progression of Parkinson’s disease can be slowed down through aerobics, a new study shows.
The research shows a direct link between aerobic exercise and Parkinson’s disease. “Aerobic exercise means vigorous exercise, which makes you hot, sweaty and tired,” says Mayo Clinic Neurologist E Eric Ahlskog.

What Ahlskog is referring to is activity such as brisk walking or using an elliptical machine. These exercises could help with symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, he says.  Incidentally, stretching and balancing exercises are not beneficial in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
According to Ahlskog, scientific studies show that aerobic exercise enhances factor that have a potentially protective effect on the brain. This helps fight the progression of Parkinson’s disease, as well as dementia.
Exercise, says Ahlskog, helps maintain brain connections and counters brain shrinkage resulting from Parkinson’s disease. It also helps fight brain aging.
The finding assumes significance considering that scientists are struggling to understand the mechanism of Parkinson’s disease. Researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Ageing have now discovered that excess iron damages the brain and contributes to Parkinson’s disease.
The researchers have found that excess iron damages the neurons in the brain by impairing structures called lysosome, which repair damage. This leads to aging and neurodegenerative diseases, reports the Express. The research findings were published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Ahlskog’s conclusion on the role played by aerobics in controlling Parkinson’s disease adds to the list of health benefits of aerobic exercises. Besides weight-loss, aerobics help in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, improving digestion, strengthening heart and lung health, and decreasing type 2 diabetes risks. It also helps reduce stress and boost happiness, reports New Indian Express.
